BEST MERCER COUNTY FALL HIKES FOR KIDS

One of the best ways to spend quality time with your family is by going outside and taking a hike. So, celebrate the colorful season at these three spots for easy, kid-friendly fall hikes! Each of these trails is ideal for families because they are scenic and appropriate for hikers of all different levels. 

Here are a few places in Mercer County where you can enjoy the journey with kids in tow. 

Camp Creek State Park 

Known for beautiful waterfalls and excellent camping, Camp Creek State Park is the perfect place to start your family hiking adventure! The Almost Heaven Road and Trail is a 0.6-mile level-grade trail. This route must first be accessed by hiking the Farley Ridge Road and Trail (2.4 miles). The trailhead for this moderate route is located across from the playground next to the basketball court. The landscape of these trails truly shows the meaning of “Almost Heaven.” Pass by the scenic campsites and the Ranger Outpost Cabin – an off-the-grid cabin built in 2020. The trail continues until it intersects with the Turkey Loop Road and Trail (a moderate, 8.7-mile route). 

Other easy trails at Camp Creek State Park include the Horse Bypass Trail (0.7 miles) and the Waldron Spur Road and Trail (0.75 miles). While at Camp Creek State Park, take advantage of the pristine area and enjoy biking, horseback riding, fishing and picnicking opportunities with your family. Extend your trip with an overnight stay in a cabin or at a campsite in the park.

Brush Creek Preserve and Falls

Brush Creek Preserve and Falls is a hidden gem that is great for a family day trip. The area is protected by The Nature Conservancy and is home to many wildflowers and uncommon plant species. The main trail into the preserve consists of a large foot trail that begins at the parking area. Before reaching the 1.5-mile Nature Conservancy Preserve, take in the beauty of Brush Creek Falls. This wide 25-foot waterfall is very easy to visit and is a favored spot because of its beauty and accessibility. Families can walk up to the brink of the fall and down to the base, and depending on water levels, might even be able to get behind parts of the waterfall. The hike to Brush Creek Falls is just a quarter of a mile, so it’s great for those with shorter legs. 

The preserve, which is open year-round, is also home to many wildflowers and uncommon plant species, including the rare Canby’s mountain-lover, Canada yew, shale barren onion and white cedar.

Lotito City Park 

Lotito City Park, also known as Bluefield City Park, has seven trails across 14 miles, primarily in the park’s wooded area. Add the appropriately named Family-Friendly Trail to your outdoor itinerary. This 1.3-mile hike is generally flat with a hard-packed gravel surface. This hike will enchant your toddling explorers and ignite a love of nature with 15 signs located on the trail about the local flora. Other family-recommended trails at Lotito City Park include Creek Trail (1 mile) and the Scout Trail (1.5 miles). 

Make it a full day and take advantage of the four pavilions, playgrounds, picnic tables and tennis courts located at the park.
