Last updated: March 3, 2025

In today’s fast-paced world, finding uninterrupted quality time with family can be a challenge. But in Mercer County, off-roading brings everyone together! Load up the kids and hit the all-terrain trails, where there are no distractions — just the beauty of nature and the thrill of the ride.

Getting Kids Started With ATV Riding

ATV riding is a great way to introduce children to the outdoors while helping them build confidence and develop lifelong hobbies. Learning to navigate trails at a young age improves coordination, awareness and overall comfort on the machine.

In the background, two people are walking hand-in-hand, silhouetted against the golden light reflecting off the valley below. The scene captures an adventurous outdoor moment with dramatic lighting.

Safety is key when getting started. Young riders should always wear properly fitted, Department of Transportation-compliant helmets, goggles and gloves. Protective gear should be worn at all times to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

Best ATV Trails For Families

When it comes to ATV riding, practice makes perfect. Regular riding is the best way to improve skills and feel in control on the trails. And what better place to learn and explore than the world-famous Hatfield-McCoy Trail System?

The trails are color-coded by difficulty, making it easy to choose the best route for your child’s skill level. Green trails are ideal for beginners, providing smooth and easy terrain, while blue trails offer a moderate challenge for those ready to advance.

A great starting point is the Pocahontas Trailhead, located in Coaldale, just outside historic Bramwell. This year-round trailhead has convenient parking, rest facilities and direct access from I-77.

The Pocahontas Trail System is one of the biggest sections of the Hatfield-McCoy network, and features a high number of green and blue trails that provide an exciting and safe ride for young riders. For extended adventures, the system connects with Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek and Warrior, forming the largest continuous off-road network east of the Mississippi.

ATV Safety Rules & Regulations

The scene features lush green trees on both sides of the dirt path, with dappled sunlight creating a beautiful atmosphere. At the bottom of the image is a puddle that perfectly mirrors the forest and vehicles, creating a symmetrical reflection. The overall mood conveys adventure and exploration in a serene natural setting.

Before heading out, it’s important to know the rules. Children under six years old are not permitted on the trails, and any rider under sixteen must remain under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. For a full list of regulations, visit the Hatfield-McCoy Trails website.
