EASY HIKES NEAR I- 77 IN SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA
If you are driving on Interstate 77 through Southern West Virginia, the easiest (and scenic) hikes are only a few miles away. Here are a few good trails with overlooks and waterfalls that don’t require huge detours.
Super close to I-77 (5-10 minutes)
- Camp Creek State Park: Only 5 minutes off exit 20 on I-77, it is probably the easiest “pull off the interstate and hike” option. Two stunning waterfalls are also part of this park system. Some summer road work could affect mileage and timing.
- Gardner Center Trails : Located near Exit 14 in Athens, these trails are short and sweet. There is nearly 7,000 feet of wooden trails that are easy for couples, families and pets. Its the perfect stop just a jump away from the Interstate.
Worth the extra mile
- Brush Creek Falls: This waterfall and hiking spot can be accessed by both Exit 9 and Exit 14 off I-77. The waterfall is only a short walk from the parking lot (less than 0.25) but you can keep walking into the preserve for a longer hike towards White Oak Falls. Brush Creek Falls is the perfect place for a quick walk and photo in under 30 minutes from 1-77.
- Pipestem Resort State Park: The grandest of them all is off of Exit 14, about 25 minutes away. Find overlooks, an Almost Heaven Swing, 20 miles of trails and more at this southern West Virginia State Park. The Pipestem Knob Trail is short, but a steep paved hike up to the Bolar Observation Tower.
