WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BASECAMP BY VISIT MERCER COUNTY

Visit Mercer County has been welcoming visitors and promoting Mercer County for more than 40 years. Now, for the first time, there’s a dedicated visitor information and retail space designed for people to stop in.

Basecamp by Visit Mercer County is located at 858 Mercer Street in Princeton. It’s a place to pick up travel information, ask questions, shop West Virginia’s Almost Heaven merchandise and figure out where to go next.

Is Basecamp new?

The space is new, but the work behind it isn’t.

Visit Mercer County has served as Mercer County’s official destination marketing organization since 1985, helping visitors discover the area and promoting local attractions, communities and tourism businesses.

Basecamp is the organization’s first dedicated visitor information and retail space. It is a goal that has been years in the making.

Why is it called Basecamp?

The name comes from the literal meaning of a base camp: the place you start from before heading out to explore.

That fit what we wanted the space to do. Visitors can stop in, get information and ideas, and then head out to experience Mercer County for themselves.

As an area with three state parks and miles of ATV trails, we wanted to bring the outdoors to the forefront.

What can I find at Basecamp?

Visitors can pick up free Mercer County visitor guides, West Virginia travel guides, maps and information about attractions, outdoor recreation, dining, events and more.

Basecamp also includes a retail area with West Virginia’s Almost Heaven merchandise and items such as postcards, keychains and stickers.

Is Basecamp only for visitors?

Not at all. Locals are welcome and encouraged to stop in. We want locals to be proud of their home.

It can be a resource when you have friends or family coming to town, when you’re looking for something different to do or when you simply want to see what you may have been overlooking in your own backyard.

Can someone help me figure out what to do?

Yes. Sometimes you don’t need another Google search. You need to tell someone, “We have a few hours. What should we do?”

Visit Mercer County staff can help with ideas based on how much time you have, what you’re interested in and what part of the county you’d like to explore.

What’s cool inside the new visitor center?

There is more than just brochures and maps. Here, you will find stories about the people and places that left their mark on Appalachian music, arts, history and culture.

Basecamp is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Basecamp will open to the pubic on Friday, October 23 at 9 a.m.
