5 TRAIL ETIQUETTE TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR ATV RIDE 

Whether you’re a first-time rider or just need a quick refresher, knowing proper trail etiquette is key to keeping the ride safe and enjoyable for everyone. Mercer County is home to the Pocahontas Trailhead of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System — one of the best places to explore by ATV. Help us keep these trails open, beautiful and safe for years to come by following these seven trail etiquette tips.

1. Stay On Marked Trails

Stick to designated routes to protect the environment and respect private property. Riding off-trail can cause damage and lead to closures.

2. Follow Signs & Markers

Trail signs are there for a reason. Pay attention to difficulty ratings, directional markers and any posted warnings to ensure a safe ride.

3. Use Hand Signals

When passing, hold up your fingers to show how many riders are behind you. This motion helps oncoming riders know what to expect.

4. Yield When Needed

Uphill riders generally have the right of way. If you’re riding at a slower pace, pull over when it’s safe to let faster riders pass.

5. Protect the community

The HMT trails include several local towns such as Bluewell, Rock, Montcalm, Bramwell and more. To help preserve those communities, turn light bars off on public roads, (WV Code §17C-15-3), observe quiet hours from 10 p.m.- 7 a.m., reduce speed in neighborhoods and turn town stereo volume when riding to and from resorts, or vacation rentals.
