8 REASONS TO LOVE SUMMER IN MERCER COUNTY

There’s something about summer in Mercer County, West Virginia, that makes you want to take your time in the sun and enjoy how the evenings seem to linger a little longer. Our Uniquely Appalachian summers are filled with time outside, fresh mountain air and quiet nights under the stars. Here are eight reasons to love summer in Mercer County.

1. Picnics in the Park

With three state parks, a nature preserve and a variety of local green spaces, the hardest part is choosing where to unfold your blanket. Pack a lunch and find your perfect spot — whether it’s beside a cascading waterfall at Camp Creek State Park or atop the scenic overlook at Pinnacle Rock, the view will stop you in your tracks.

2. ATV Riding

The Hatfield–McCoy Trails are open all year, but summer might be the most refreshing time to ride. Wind through rhododendron-filled ravines and shaded forest trails that feel like nature’s version of air conditioning.

3. Water Adventures

When the summer sun is high, there’s no better escape than the water. Paddle a serene lake, set off down a gentle stream, or head to Pipestem Resort State Park’s Adventure Lake and Splash Pad. With inflatable mountains, slides and trampolines, the lake is a floating playground for all ages.

4. Local Festivals

Summer is festival season, and that means music, food and a whole lot of community spirit. From street festivals to county fairs and live outdoor entertainment, Mercer County’s festivals feel like a big family reunion — and everyone’s invited!

5. Small Town Fun

Our small towns come alive in the summer. Sip free lemonade in Bluefield when temperatures hit 90 (yes, really!), cheer for the Bluefield Ridge Runners, or take a walk past colorful murals and historic homes. There’s something happening around every corner.

6. Nostalgic Favorites

Catch a double feature at the Pipestem Drive-In, one of the last remaining in the state, or enjoy a milkshake at an old-school soda fountain. These aren’t just throwbacks — they’re still part of everyday life here.

7. Nature Sounds

From birds chirping at sunrise to crickets humming at night, nature speaks in soft rhythms in Mercer County. Wander a wooded trail, sit quietly in a preserve or just pause and listen — it’s the soundtrack of a slower summer.

8. Camping

End your day under a wide-open, star-filled sky. Pitch a tent at one of our scenic campgrounds, build a fire and settle in for a peaceful night in the mountains. Mercer County nights are best experienced outdoors.

Plan Your Summer Getaway

Summer — like every season in Mercer County — isn’t just something to see. It’s something to feel, to breathe in, and to remember. Request your free travel guide and come discover what makes this corner of Appalachia so unique.
