TAKE A RIDE ON THE NEW AERIAL TRAM AT PIPESTEM RESORT STATE PARK
An Accessible Adventure
After nearly two years, the beloved aerial tram at Pipestem Resort State Park is back in action. The brand-new tram carries passengers 1,200 feet down into the scenic Bluestone River Gorge, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the winding river below.
The six-minute ride covers 3,410 feet, giving plenty of time to soak in the scenery. Each updated gondola seats six passengers and is ADA accessible, with a larger design that makes boarding and seating more comfortable for visitors of all abilities.
Beyond accessibility, the tram also delivers major upgrades in safety and efficiency. According to West Virginia State Parks, the new gondolas can now safely operate in winds up to 54 miles per hour — a big improvement from the previous limit of 24 miles per hour.
A Gateway To More Fun
At the bottom of the gorge, the tram brings guests to the newly reopened Mountain Creek Lodge. Open seasonally from May through October, the lodge features 30 guest rooms, the Mountain Creek Restaurant and a gift shop. Accessible only by the tramway, it’s the perfect spot for a one-of-a-kind overnight stay or a meal between outdoor activities.
From here, visitors can access the Bluestone River for fishing and the Bluestone Turnpike Trail, an 8.5-mile route connecting Pipestem to Bluestone State Park. Thanks to a dedicated freight gondola, visitors can easily bring along bicycles, kayaks and other gear, so the adventure never has to pause.
A Touch of Nostalgia
For many, the tramway isn’t just a ride; it’s a memory. In operation for more than 50 years, it holds a special place in the hearts of locals and longtime visitors. This modern upgrade preserves that nostalgia while giving new generations the chance to experience the beauty of Pipestem from a whole new perspective.
Plan Your Visit
With fall approaching, it’s the best season to ride the tramway and glide into the gorge surrounded by vibrant shades of red, orange and gold. The aerial tram operates Thursday through Sunday until October 31.
