Birdwatching

According to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR), the state is home to more than 170 wild bird breeding species, making it a top destination for birders. The WVDNR lists several prime birding spots in Mercer County, including:

• Pipestem Resort State Park: Look for wood warblers, thrushes, buntings, vireos, ravens and hawks — plus nuthatches and kinglets in winter.
• Glenwood Park: A great spot for spring warblers and migrating gulls, terns and sandpipers.
• Camp Creek State Park and Forest: A haven for woodland birds like warblers, thrushes and tanagers.
• East River Mountain Hawk Watch Area: A known spot for migrating raptors.

Waterfalls

Use Mercer County as your starting point to become a true waterfall wanderer. Follow the West Virginia Waterfall Trail to discover four stunning cascades in the area — Campbell Falls, Mash Fork Falls, Brush Creek Falls and White Oak Falls. Each waterfall transforms with the seasons, offering a new perspective every time you visit.

Mercer County is home to some of West Virginia’s most popular fishing spots, from tranquil forest streams to man-made ponds. Spend a relaxing day by the water where your toughest decision is whether to fly, spin or bait. 

Glenwood Recreational Park features a tranquil 55-acre lake, ideal for catfish and bass fishing, while Camp Creek State Park provides a serene retreat where anglers can cast for trout stocked in February and spring. Pipestem Resort State Park is home to Long Branch Lake and has access to the Bluestone and New rivers, both teeming with trout and smallmouth bass. For a hidden gem, visit Dan Hale Reservoir, a 76-acre lake called “West Virginia’s Bass Kept Secret,” where you can fish for bass, catfish, trout, crappie and bluegill. Before casting your line, be sure to obtain a West Virginia fishing license.

Biking

Looking to embrace a new challenge in the great outdoors? Mercer County’s trails are the perfect place to enhance your mountain biking skills. At Camp Creek State Park, over half of the trails are bike-friendly, catering to all skill levels and providing routes that lead to breathtaking waterfall views. Pipestem Resort State Park also features a variety of mountain biking trails, and you can even rent advanced electric bikes to make navigating the terrain easier. Bluefield City Park adds to the experience with trails for every rider, from gentle loops to challenging singletrack routes with steep terrain.

Hiking 

Hiking might not be a brand-new activity for you, but experiencing the Uniquely Appalachian trails in Mercer County is an adventure you won’t forget! With three state parks and numerous local parks, Mercer County has trails to suit every hiker. 

Camp Creek State Park is a standout destination, spanning 6,000 acres of lush forest with over 35 miles of trails. For breathtaking views, head to Pinnacle Rock State Park, where you can hike to the top of a striking 3,100-foot rock formation. In addition, Pipestem Resort State Park has 17 diverse trails, catering to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned hikers seeking a challenge.

In Princeton, the Gardner Center Trails provide a newer option for exploration. This 23-acre woodland area features a six-trail network ranging from easy to moderate difficulty.
