Located on Commerce Street, the Granada was the gathering place for big nights out in Bluefield for generations. People arrived early to pick the best seats, settling in before the lights dimmed. 

The theater opened in 1928 with a distinctive Spanish Moorish design that set it apart. In its early years, the Granada hosted silent films and welcomed well-known celebrities, including Bing Crosby, Marian Anderson, Frank Sinatra and Greer Garson. Later, architect E.H. Geissler modernized the building, adding a stage for vaudeville acts and big band performances. Most recently, dedicated community revitalization efforts brought the Granada back to life once again. Through every chapter, the theater created special moments that people could enjoy together.

A Place Filled With Memories

Today, the Granada has been beautifully restored, but its spirit hasn’t changed. The plush red seats and the quiet anticipation before the opening scene bring back a sense of excitement that streaming at home can’t quite replicate. While you may be able to pause a movie from your couch, you can’t recreate the shared experience of a room full of people laughing, reacting and enjoying a show in real time.

Every Friday through Sunday, the Granada welcomes moviegoers to both the Historic Granada Theater and the Raleigh Street Cinemas, offering new releases, classics and special events. The theater plans to expand programming to include more live performances in the future, giving you even more reasons to make the Granada part of your Mercer County plans.
