FIND YOUR NEXT BIG CATCH IN MERCER COUNTY

Quiet streams, rustling leaves and not another soul in sight — fishing in Mercer County, West Virginia, is the kind of peaceful retreat that stays with you. From remote rivers to wide-open lakes and creeks, our area is full of places to drop a line and enjoy the stillness of nature. Here are a few top fishing spots worth checking out.

Bluestone National Scenic River

Flowing through Mercer County, the Bluestone National Scenic River is one of West Virginia’s most serene places to fish. With scenic shoreline access, clear casting lines and plenty of fish, it’s a favorite for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

A tributary of the New River, the Bluestone River runs for 77 miles, starting at East River Mountain near Bluefield, Virginia, and ending at Bluestone Lake near Hinton. The 10.5-mile stretch near Pipestem Resort State Park and Bluestone State Park is the protected National Scenic River section.

The Bluestone River is classified as a High Quality Warm Water Stream. You’ll find a variety of fish here, including smallmouth and largemouth bass, spotted bass, muskellunge, walleye, white bass, rock bass, crappie, several types of sunfish, channel catfish and flathead catfish.

Camp Creek State Park

Follow the sound of rushing water to Camp Creek State Park. Mash Fork, which flows into Camp Creek, is a great place to fish for trout, especially rainbow and golden trout. Smallmouth bass and bluegill are also common in the park’s creeks, offering a rewarding mix for any fishing trip.

With nearly 6,000 acres of forest, two waterfalls, 35 miles of trails and seven miles of trout streams, Camp Creek is one of the best fishing getaways in the state. There are four campgrounds and a variety of cabins, so it’s easy to extend your day trip into a weekend stay.

Pipestem Resort State Park

There’s no shortage of fishing options at Pipestem Resort State Park. Cast your line in Long Branch Lake or in the Bluestone and New Rivers.

Long Branch Lake sits almost in the center of the park. The 16-acre lake is teeming with largemouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish and bluegill.

For more of a backcountry feel, hike the Bluestone Turnpike Trail. This 9.5-mile trail runs alongside the Bluestone National Scenic River and offers many places to wade in and fly fish for trout and smallmouth bass.

Get Prepared

Before you head out, make sure you have a current West Virginia fishing license and the right stamps. You can buy your license online, at the Mercer County Clerk’s office (1501 Main Street, Princeton) or at Walmart (201 Greasy Ridge Road, Princeton). It’s also a good idea to review the latest fishing rules and regulations for the state.
