ATV TRAIL SAFETY 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU RIDE

Off-roading is all about adventure — but it’s even better when done safely! Mercer County, with its direct access to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails via the Pocahontas Trailhead in Bramwell, stands out as a top destination for ATV enthusiasts. Whether you’re here for a weekend or planning an extended stay, you’ll find well-maintained trails, stunning scenery and a welcoming off-road community.

Before hitting the trails, take a moment to familiarize yourself with these essential trail rules and safety tips.

General Rules

The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System operates under regulations set by the West Virginia State Legislature (HB 4488, 20-14-8). While you should review the full guidelines, here are the key rules all riders must follow.

  • User permits are required for all drivers and passengers.
  • Everyone must wear a Department of Transportation or Snell-approved helmet and eye protection.
  • All operators and passengers must meet the manufacturer’s minimum age and size requirements.
  • No one under the age of six is allowed on the trails under any circumstances.
  • Any operator or passenger under the age of 16 must be under direct supervision and within the eyesight of their parent or guardian at all times.
  • Obey all signs, gates and barriers, and stay on marked trails.
  • Trails are only open during daylight hours.
  • No littering, no camping and no fires allowed.
  • No alcohol may be consumed or possessed.
  • No glass containers of any kind.
  • Be aware of oncoming traffic, particularly in blind curves and hills.
  • No competitions of speed, endurance or climbing ability are allowed at any time without a special use permit.
  • Operate at reasonable speeds and under control at all times.
  • All machines must be equipped with a properly functioning muffler and USFS-approved spark arrestor.

Safety Tips

A little preparation goes a long way in making sure your ride is both safe and enjoyable.

Wear Protective Gear

Your helmet, goggles and gloves aren’t just for looks — they keep you safe. Make sure your gear is properly fitted and meets safety standards before heading out.

Stick To Trail Hours

Trails are open from dawn to dusk, year-round — no night riding allowed. Reduced visibility at night increases the risk of accidents, so plan your ride accordingly.

Ride With A Buddy

Off-roading is more fun with friends! Plus, having a riding partner means extra safety in case of an emergency.

Be Prepared

Cell service can be spotty on the trails. Bring a paper trail map, first aid kit and basic tools in case you need them. You can find maps and other essentials at the Pocahontas Trailhead.

Follow these safety rules, and you’re set for an unforgettable ride!

Plan Your ATV Getaway

Ready to ride? Find nearby restaurants and ATV-friendly lodging to complete your trip. With many accommodations right on the trail system, you can wake up, step outside and start your ride. Request a free travel guide and start planning your getaway to Mercer County.
