7 TRAIL ETIQUETTE TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR ATV RIDE

Whether you’re a first-time rider or just need a quick refresher, knowing proper trail etiquette is key to keeping the ride safe and enjoyable for everyone. Mercer County is home to the Pocahontas Trailhead of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System — one of the best places to explore by ATV. Help us keep these trails open, beautiful and safe for years to come by following these seven trail etiquette tips.

1. Stay On Marked Trails

Stick to designated routes to protect the environment and respect private property. Riding off-trail can cause damage and lead to closures.

2. Follow Signs & Markers

Trail signs are there for a reason. Pay attention to difficulty ratings, directional markers and any posted warnings to ensure a safe ride.

3. Use Hand Signals

When passing, hold up your fingers to show how many riders are behind you. This motion helps oncoming riders know what to expect.

4. Yield When Needed

Uphill riders generally have the right of way. If you’re riding at a slower pace, pull over when it’s safe to let faster riders pass.

5. Respect Private Land

Many trails cross private property. Be a good neighbor — don’t trespass, and keep noise levels down near homes and communities.

6. Ride At A Safe Speed

Trail conditions can change fast. Stay in control and keep your speed reasonable to avoid accidents.

7. Protect The Outdoors

Leave no trace — pack out what you pack in. Help preserve the trails by avoiding excessive noise, using designated stream crossings and keeping the landscape clean. Be especially mindful near the communities of Montcalm, Bluewell, Bramwell and Rock.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help keep Mercer County’s trails safe and scenic for generations to come.

Plan Your ATV Getaway

Ready to ride? Find nearby restaurants and ATV-friendly lodging to complete your trip. With many accommodations right on the trail system, you can wake up, step outside and start your ride. Request a free travel guide and start planning your getaway to Mercer County.
