UNVEILING WHITE OAK FALLS: A MERCER COUNTY NATURE TREASURE

The Journey to White Oak Falls

In Mercer County, White Oak Falls is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. This waterfall offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in Appalachia. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful spot to relax, White Oak Falls is the newest edition to the West Virginia Waterfall Trail.

Getting to White Oak Falls is an adventure in itself. Located near Brush Creek Falls, White Oak can be accessed via a moderate hiking trail that winds through lush forest. The trailhead provides parking and is well-marked, ensuring that even first-time visitors can find their way with ease. The trail is mix of West Virginia State Parks, The Nature Conservatory and County property. The trail has been recently upgraded as well, making it great for families. We do recommend strollers for toddlers.

The hike to White Oak Falls is a 4-mile round trip. The trail meanders through diverse terrain, offering glimpses of local flora and fauna. In the spring and early summer, the path is adorned with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to the landscape. As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water grows louder, building anticipation for the breathtaking sight that awaits.

The Majestic White Oak Falls

Upon reaching White Oak Falls, visitors are greeted by the Bluestone River, as well as a cascade of water plunging over rocks. The pool at the base of the falls is a perfect spot for wading and cooling off on a hot summer day, and the surrounding rocks provide ideal seating for those who wish to sit and enjoy the view.

The area around the falls is relatively untouched, offering a pristine and unspoiled environment that is rare to find. The canopy of trees overhead provides ample shade, making it a comfortable spot to spend a few hours in contemplation or simply soaking in the natural beauty.

Tips for Visiting White Oak Falls

  • Plan Your Visit: The falls can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering a unique perspective.
  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: The trail to the falls can be uneven and slippery in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water! Bug spray and sunscreen are also advisable.
  • Leave No Trace: White Oak Falls is a pristine natural area, and it’s essential to keep it that way. Pack out all trash and be mindful of your impact on the environment.
  • Safety First: While the pool at the base of the falls is inviting, always exercise caution when wading or swimming. The rocks can be slippery, and the water’s depth can vary.
