HOW TO PLAN A NIGHT AT THE PIPESTEM DRIVE-IN
Since 1972, this drive-in, located in Athens, West Virginia, is a blast from the past. Before you go, here are a few things to know so you can enjoy the movie, the snacks and all the nostalgia.
1. It is open seasonally
The Pipestem Drive-In typically operates late May-through Halloween, so check the current movie schedule before you make plans.
2. Movies start at dusk
Showtimes depend on sunset, so the start time changes throughout the season. Arrive early enough to park, grab snacks and get settled before the movie begins.
3. Bring cash
The Pipestem Drive-In is cash only, so stop at an ATM before you go.
4. One ticket usually includes two movies
Drive-ins are known for double features, which makes it an affordable night out for families, date nights or groups.
5. Sunday is carload night
On Sundays, the drive-in typically offers a carload price, so everyone in your vehicle gets in for one set price.
6. You can listen through your car radio
Movie audio is played through an FM radio station. Make sure your vehicle radio works, or bring a portable radio if you plan to sit outside.
7. Lawn chairs are a good idea
Many visitors bring chairs, blankets or sit in the back of a truck. It makes the night feel more relaxed and comfortable.
8. The second movie ends late
Double features often run well past midnight, especially during the summer. If you’re planning to stay for both movies, expect a late night.
9. Weather can affect your experience
Because the movies are shown outdoors, temperatures can cool off after sunset even in summer. A light jacket or blanket can make the evening more comfortable.
9. New movies are shown throughout the season
The movie lineup changes regularly, so even repeat visitors can have a different experience each time they visit. You see the movie schedule here: https://www.facebook.com/pipestemdrivein
