EXPLORE THE MERCER STREET GRASSROOTS DISTRICT IN PRINCETON, WV

Grassroots /ˈɡras ˈˌro͞ots/
In Mercer County, “grassroots” isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a place. The Mercer Street Grassroots District in downtown Princeton is where you’ll find local art, live music, small businesses, street fairs, and Appalachian culture at its most authentic.

If you’re traveling I-77 or staying in Princeton, this vibrant district is a must-visit stop.

A Hub for Appalachian Arts & Murals

At the heart of the district is the RiffRaff Arts Collective, a creative co-op that supports artists, musicians, and performers from across the region. Right across the street, Holler: Contemporary Appalachian Art Gallery offers a rotating showcase of modern work inspired by the region. And don’t miss the murals! The Grassroots District features more than 34 professional murals, including 22 in the colorful Artist’s Alley. Snap a photo and tag #visitmercerwv for a chance to be featured.

Shop, Sip & Dine

Mercer Street is lined with one-of-a-kind small businesses. Highlights include:

  • The Hatter’s Bookshop – A cozy used bookstore with local finds and children’s stories.
  • The Dream Bean Coffee House – Grab a latte, relax, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.
  • Jimmie’s Restaurant – A local staple for pizza and comfort food favorites.

Don’t Miss: First Fridays & Seasonal Festivals

Every First Friday of the month, the district comes alive with specials, pop-ups, and events. It’s the perfect evening to walk the district, visit the Princeton Railroad Museum, and enjoy live music or a gallery exhibit.

The Grassroots District also hosts signature events throughout the year:

  • Cool Cruisin’ Nights (3rd Saturdays, May–Sept) – Classic cars, 1950s vibes, and downtown nostalgia.
  • Autumnfest – A fall celebration with food vendors, crafts, and apple butter.
  • Downtown Countdown – A family-friendly New Year’s Eve bash with live music and a midnight ball drop.

Plan Your Visit

There’s always something happening in the Mercer Street Grassroots District. Whether you’re exploring the murals, grabbing coffee, or attending a festival, you’ll experience the best of grassroots Appalachian culture right here in downtown Princeton.
