LEAVE NO TRACE IN MERCER COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA
State parks exist to protect natural beauty, historic sites and outdoor recreation spaces for everyone to enjoy. In Mercer County, three West Virginia state parks — Camp Creek, Pinnacle Rock and Pipestem Resort — offer a perfect blend of scenic views and outdoor adventures. To help preserve these special places for future generations, we encourage visitors to follow sustainable tourism practices and the Leave No Trace Principles.
What Is Sustainable Tourism?
Defined by The Travel Foundation, sustainable tourism, also known as regenerative tourism, “seeks to create a positive impact on local communities and leave the destination in a better state than it was found, while providing an authentic travel experience for visitors.” One of the easiest ways to travel sustainably is by following the Leave No Trace Principles.
Leave No Trace Principles
Explore responsibly and help preserve Mercer County’s outdoor spaces. Whether you’re hiking, mountain biking, fishing or horseback riding, your actions are essential in protecting the area’s natural beauty. By following these seven principles, you play a key role in safeguarding the trails, streams and forests for tomorrow’s adventurers.
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
Check weather conditions, trail maps and local regulations before heading out. Pack appropriate gear, bring enough food and water, and have a backup plan in case of emergencies.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to designated trails and campsites to prevent damage to fragile ecosystems. Keep your boots, wheels and tents on durable surfaces.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Pack it in, pack it out. Take all trash, food scraps and pet waste with you. If no trash cans are available, take your waste home — nature isn’t a landfill.
4. Leave What You Find
Preserve the landscape by leaving rocks, plants and historical artifacts untouched. Take only photos; leave only footprints.
5. Minimize Campfire Impact
Use a camp stove whenever possible. If fires are allowed, keep them small, use designated fire rings and fully extinguish them before leaving.
6. Respect Wildlife
Observe animals from a distance and never feed them because human food can be harmful. Keep pets leashed to protect both wildlife and your furry friend.
7. Be Considerate of Others
Respect fellow adventurers and locals by keeping noise levels down, yielding to others on trails, and following posted rules for hiking, camping and ATV riding.
Following these simple but impactful principles helps maintain the distinct character and charm of Mercer County. Adventure responsibly and leave the land better than you found it.
