5 TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS YOU CAN’T MISS IN MERCER COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA

From cascading waterfalls and seasonal wildflowers to panoramic mountain views and family-friendly paths, the trails in Mercer County, West Virginia, offer something for everyone. Whether you’re hiking or biking, here’s what you can expect to find along the way.

1. Waterfalls

Mercer County is known for its beautiful waterfalls, and chances are you’ll come across at least one while exploring the trails.

For a scenic trek, take the County Line Trail at Pipestem Resort State Park and get a glimpse of Indian Branch Falls. This stunning 45-foot waterfall cascades into a lush ravine, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and greenery. The 1.9-mile moderate trail begins at the Pipestem Nature Center, leading you to the falls just over a mile in, making it a perfect spot to pause and soak in the scenery before continuing your hike.

For an easy-to-access waterfall hike, visit Camp Creek State Park — home to Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls. Campbell Falls, the larger of the two, is about 15 feet high and 40 feet wide, depending on water levels. Nearby, Mash Fork Falls is smaller but equally picturesque, with its wide, tiered cascades. Both falls are easily accessible and offer excellent photo opportunities.

2. Seasonal Wildflowers

Mercer County’s trails burst with color throughout the seasons, showcasing a variety of native wildflowers.

At Camp Creek State Park, nearly 6,000 acres of forest provide the perfect setting to spot trilliums, bloodroot and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. During the spring, the trails at the Bluefield City Park come alive with colorful West Virginia wildflowers. Additionally, the Princeton City Park features a two-mile walking trail loop that passes by the park’s Pollinator Garden, giving nature lovers the best excuse to slow down and appreciate the changing seasons.

For a rare botanical experience, visit Brush Creek Preserve to find uncommon plant species like Canby’s mountain-lover, Canada yew, shale barren onion and white cedar.

3. Majestic Views

If you’re searching for unforgettable sights, Mercer County’s trails deliver.

One of the most iconic overlooks can be found atop Pinnacle Rock, a 3,100-foot sandstone formation in Pinnacle Rock State Park. A short but rewarding climb up the rock staircase leads to panoramic mountain views stretching for miles. The park also features eight hiking trails, six of which are bike-friendly.

For another impressive vantage point, hike the Pipestem Knob Trail at Pipestem Resort State Park. This steep but short 0.2-mile paved path leads to Bolar Observation Tower, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views from 3,000 feet above.

4. Pet-Friendly Trails

Traveling with your four-legged friend? Many of Mercer County’s trails are pet-friendly, including those at our state parks. Load up your pup and head to Camp Creek State Park, which features wide-open spaces, water access and pet-friendly campgrounds. Just remember to always keep your pet leashed and check park regulations before visiting.

5. Kid-Friendly Adventures

Families with young hikers will find plenty of easy, engaging trails in Mercer County.

At Bluefield City Park, the Family-Friendly Trail (1.3 miles) offers a smooth, hard-packed gravel surface, perfect for little explorers. Along the way, 15 educational signs provide fun facts about local plants and trees. Other great trails in the park include the Creek Trail (1 mile) and Scout Trail (1.5 miles).

For a short but rewarding adventure, visit Brush Creek Preserve. A quick hike from the parking area leads to Brush Creek Falls, a wide 25-foot waterfall that’s easy to access. Families can explore the base, walk up to the brink of the falls, or even step behind the cascading water when conditions allow.

At Camp Creek State Park, kids will love visiting Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls. The White Oak Road and Trail (1.4 miles) provides easy access to Campbell Falls, while Mash Fork Falls is just a short quarter-mile walk along a gravel road. These scenic spots are great for skipping rocks, wading in the creek and capturing special family photos.
