Six places to scoop up summertime treats

Last updated: February 2, 2022

We got the summertime scoop when it comes to ice cream and frozen yogurt in Mercer County.  Our favorite creamy treats are the perfect way to end a hot summer day, whether you are on the famous Hatfield-McCoy ATV trails or hiking to the top of a scenic overlook. Here are six places to enjoy a cool scoop of summertime love.

Blue Ridge Bee Company

Princeton’s only hand-scooped ice cream shop changes flavors daily. If you find one you love, you might need a second scoop or a next-day return visit. Try the waffle cones, or a waffle bowl for some crunch.  This store also sells honey, jams, bee supplies and much more.  Afterwards, take a stroll through the Grassroots District and look for the colorful array of murals by local artists.

Lynn’s Drive in

One of the first ice cream stands in Mercer County, Lynn’s Drive has been dishing up ice cream since 1950. The list of flavors is long, but popular scoops include red velvet, German chocolate, peanut butter, and banana. The drive-in, which is the last in the county, also features dipped cones, milkshakes, and banana splits. Lynn’s Drive in is located on Route 52 in Bluewell.

Bakery on the Hill

Bluefield’s Bakery on the Hill, part of an historic bed and breakfast, scoops up seven to nine flavors. Served in a bowl, cup or four different types of cones, the most popular flavors with kids is the unicorn swirls of birthday cake, while adults tend to prefer the rich flavor of butter pecan. Top it off with colorful sprinkles and set outside on an open southern-style porch. Open seasonally.

Berkshire’s Custard

Chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla are classic, but locals always anticipate the flavor of the week at this Princeton custard stand. This summer, go ahead and add cherry topping to any dessert.  Open seasonally, take a look at their menu for other great dining options too!

The Corner Shop

Known as the ice cream capitol of the Hatfield McCoy Trails, visitors and locals can always count on homemade ice cream, malts, shakes and more at Bramwell’ Corner Shop. Keep an eye out, owner Donna Husbands makes the ice cream in-house and likes to test new flavors. Enjoy seasonal flavors in the summer such as strawberry rhubarb, lemon, key lime and much more!
