No matter what direction you go in Mercer County, you’ll find interesting local stops.

Up north, in Athens, is one of West Virginia’s last remaining drive-in theaters. With double features each weekend (May-October) and a concession stand with your favorite cinema snacks, Pipestem Drive-In is a great place to relax and catch a flick after spending the day at nearby Pipestem State Park.

Head east to Princeton and the lively Mercer Street Grassroots District. This area has a little bit of everything — from food and drinks to shopping, history and art. Visit the popular Blue Ridge Bee Company to stock up on local honey, West Virginia maple syrup, fresh produce and other items. Don’t forget to order a scoop of hand-dipped ice cream before you leave.

Feeling brave? Lake Shawnee Abandoned Amusement Park, “one of the world’s most haunted places,” is located just a few miles outside of Princeton. Private paranormal and history tours are available year-round.

In the southern part of the county, visit Bluefield, a once-booming coal town, and see its revitalization first-hand. From boutiques to bakeries, the city has plenty to explore. Enjoy a tasty breakfast or lunch at The Blue Spoon Cafe. The cheerful eatery serves specialty coffees, homemade donuts, salads, sandwiches and other dishes made with fresh, organic ingredients.

A short drive west from Bluefield is Pinnacle Rock State Park and the historic town of Bramwell. Take a walking tour of the “Town of Millionaires” to see the former homes of coal barons. If you get hungry, the Bramwell Corner Shop, a classic, old-fashioned soda fountain, is the perfect place to stop for a quick bite.
