Christmas is coming: the annual Holiday of Lights

November 22, 2017

It’s bigger and brighter than ever: Holiday of Lights, Bluefield City Park’s enormous ode to Christmas. Discover what inspired this magical tradition— and what’s on for 2017!

Sparking up some spirit

How many bulbs does it take to light up Christmas? At Bluefield City Park, that number exceeds a million during Holiday of Lights. Acres of glittery magic fill the 1.5-mile drive, which you can tour by car.

New displays and sculptures add to the collection every year, too. There are candy cane lanes, arches of stars, poinsettias, and even exotic “castles.” It’s a brilliant nocturnal landscape— one that you and your family can enjoy from Thanksgiving night through Dec. 31.

Holiday of Lights events

While every night is a treat, various activities add to the charm. This year’s Holiday of Lights will have races, hayrides, and even visits from Santa.

Look forward to:

  • Holiday of Lights 5k Challenge on Dec. 2
  • Hayrides with “Frozen” characters on Dec. 9, 16, and 22-23 ($3 a person)
  • Ridge Runner train rides with Santa on Dec. 9, 16, and 22-23 ($3 a person)
  • Stroll through the park on Dec. 3, 10, 17, and 24

Holiday of Lights will also have “A Night in Bethlehem” on Dec. 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16. It’s a live nativity with engaging historical details, like the Roman census. Visit and get “counted” with your token! Along the way, you can try pottery, metalworking, and delicious treats.

Holiday of Lights is free for tours, although donations are welcome. Hours are Fri-Sat from 6-10 p.m. and Sun-Thurs from 6-9 p.m.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Enjoy the show!
